In addition to complying with legislation and meeting all standards set by environmental authorities, the Curimbaba Group seeks to promote sustainable development by means of preventive and compensatory actions that demonstrate its commitment to society.
In its factories, the Curimbaba Group requires compliance with all instructions set forth in legislation and seeks to take a pro-active stance with regard to environmental preservation.
At São João da Boa Vista (SP), the Elfusa industrial installations are equipped with an efficient system for the containment of pollutants and the waste resulting from production is recycled or used in other applications.
Elfusa has also implemented selective waste disposal to protect the environment. More than 6 tons of waste is sent each month to recycling cooperatives. On the banks of the Jaguari-Mirim River, which separates the factory from the Elfusa Recreational Club, more than 4,000 trees of local species have been planted to help recompose riverside vegetation.
The corporation has also assumed responsibility for the landscaping and maintenance of the Joaquim Gonçalves Ledo Square, located about 500 meters from the factory, becoming the first corporation to adopt a square in the interior of the State of São Paulo.
In Poços de Caldas (MG), the bauxite deposits exploited by Mineração Curimbaba are rehabilitated as the work fronts become exhausted. The corporation maintains a plant nursery that grows about 100,000 trees every year, from 120 different native species. About 14,000 of these trees are used every year exclusively in the rehabilitation of the corporation’s mining areas.
From 5 to 8 hectares of soil are exploited each year, but, since 2002, the rehabilitation program has also included areas that were the object of deficient recuperation in the past. Therefore, Mineração Curimbaba rehabilitates an average of 25 hectares every year. Today, this rehabilitation process is concluded in three years, and can begin even before the conclusion of mining operations.
The trees cultivated in the nursery of Mineração Curimbaba are also donated to small farms and, especially, the municipal governments of Poços de Caldas, Caldas, Andradas, Senador Amaral, Bom Repouso, Manhuaçu and Simonésia, for landscaping purposes. Every year, 50,000 young trees are donated.
Another important action by Mineração Curimbaba in defense of the environment is the creation of the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) Fazenda das Pedras Leste, located in the Serra de São Domingos Municipal Park. In this property, previously used for the cultivation of eucalyptus, an environmental rehabilitation project is being implemented, whose management plans provides for the restoration of the native vegetation, composed originally of semideciduous seasonal forest, mixed rain forest and savannah-like formations in open fields and wetlands.
Upon the conclusion of the restoration of the 264 hectares that correspond to the RPPN, ecological trails and leisure areas will be built so as to enable visits by the participants in the Environmental Education Program already maintained by Mineração Curimbaba.
Bu means of this program, the corporation seeks to raise the awareness of children in the 1st to 4th grades about the importance of environmental preservation for the future of all humans.
In operation since 2002, the Environmental Education Program of Mineração Curimbaba has contributed to the improvement of the critical capacity of more than 2,000 students, all from the public school system.
Through partnerships with public and private institutions, Mineração Curimbaba has implanted several other environmental preservation measures, including:
Landscaping of the João Pinheiro Avenue, in Poços de Caldas (MG). This project included the planting of 6,750 young trees on the sides of the main avenue of this mineral spa, a contribution to the development of tourism in the city.
Adoption of squares and gardens in Poços de Caldas (MG).Mineração Curimbaba was the first corporation in the city to participate in the program for the maintenance of squares organized by the municipal government and assumed responsibility, for a three-year period, for the maintenance of the central garden of the Mansur Fhraya Avenue, for an extension of 1,500 meters.
Enlargement and renovation of the administration building in the Serra de SãoDomingos Park. This initiative marked the beginning of the implantation of the Park and included the donation of 300 topographical markers, specially produced to mark the limits of the Park.
Increasing the density of vegetation at the Saturnino de Brito Dam.This project will help improve the quantity and quality of the water supplied to the city of Poços de Caldas. Mineração Curimbaba will produce 300,000 trees of native species, which will be used to increase the density of vegetation on the margins of the basin that constitutes the dam.
